The Polar Ice House of Garner is a premier ice skating facility offering a range of activities for all ages.  We offer learn to skate, learn to play hockey, and figure skating classes, as well as hockey leagues for children and adults. We also offer a summer camp program focused on athletic activities and child development in a peer group atmosphere. Additionally, we have public skating sessions, open hockey sessions (including both Stick & Puck and Adult Pickup), and Freestyle sessions on a regular basis.

Support Staff (cashiers/ice attendants/birthday attendants)

Qualifications:

  • Must be 15 or older with a worker’s permit
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work
  • Must be working towards or possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have weekend and week night availability
  • Must have excellent communication, problem solving, and organizational skills
  • Must be able to grasp concepts quickly and be able to work well under pressure
  • Knowledge of figure skating and hockey is helpful but not necessary

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Skate Rental, Snack Bar, Front Desk, Ice Patrol
  • General customer service – interacting with customers, answering phones, program registrations
  • Maintain cleanliness of the facility
  • Ensuring the safety and satisfaction of our guests using excellent customer service skills

 

Shift Supervisors

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 or older
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be mature, responsible, and reliable
  • Must have excellent communication, problem solving, and organizational skills
  • Must have a valid NC license with reliable transportation to and from work
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations and work in a fast paced environment 
  • Must have weekend and week night availability
  • Knowledge of figure skating and hockey is helpful but not required
  • Previous experience in the ice rink industry is a plus
  • Previous customer service or management experience is a plus

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Cash management
  • Employee and building supervision
  • Time management of on-ice activities
  • Operate the Zamboni
  • Handling customer concerns
  • Ensuring the safety and satisfaction of our guests

Camp Counselors

Qualifications:

  • Assistant Director must be 21 years of age or older and a high school graduate
  • Camp Counselor must be 18 years of age or older and a high school graduate
  • Must have or obtain within the first month of employment First Aid/CPR certification and Epinephrine certification, and maintain for continued employment.
  • Ability to interact with all age levels in a positive manner.
  • Must submit to background check including local police check, child abuse and sex-offender registry check, driving check through DMV, and criminal background check.
  • Experience working with children in a recreation or educational setting and have good references.


Additional Information:

  • A flexible schedule between 7am-6pm , Monday-Friday
  • Must know how to ice skate or be willing to learn. 
  • A high energy level, and outgoing/fun personality.
  • The ability to work well as a team member
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Has a high level of initiative, creativity, sound judgment, and self-control.
  • Must have an infinite amount of patience and the ability to relate to children in a kind and loving way in stressful situations.
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently and prioritize well.

Interested in Learning to Skate?

Ice skating is an exciting, invigorating and enjoyable activity. In our Learn to Skate program, you'll gain the skills that will enable you to enjoy a lifetime of fun and exercise. Step-by-step instruction in pleasant and supervised surroundings makes learning safe and easy. New skaters are always welcome. Classes are grouped by age and ability, and meet once weekly. Classes are available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays.

RALEIGH, NC, July 24 Polar Ice House, the Triangle’s premier ice-skating facilities, announced today a youth hockey programming sponsorship with the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes.


Important Air Quality Notice

There is nothing more important to us than the safety of our guests and employees. This facility has continuous fresh air ventilated into the ice rinks. We employ electronic carbon monoxide detectors that, if an issue arises, will alert our operations personnel and activate the fresh air purge system. The ice resurfacers are operated with clean burning fuel and exhausted through a catalytic converter. We regularly maintain the ice resurfacers to ensure that they are in good working order in accordance with the highest safety standards.
